A few months ago, when I told a dear friend of my book launch date, she said October 20th is an auspicious time for the momentous occasion. Navratri, which means nine nights in Sanskrit, is a sacred Hindu festival celebrating the feminine aspect of divine power, often called Shakti. How I wish I’d remembered this fact in recent weeks!
In the throes of uncertainty about my book and my moment in the spotlight, basically outing myself, my body has reacted violently. My back, my hip, and my innards have seized. I’ve lost my phone, my keys, and my mind. Ungrounded and rattled, I’ve been forced to remember why I started a yoga practice in the first place, not for the physical aspect, although that’s lovely, but because of the chanting and breathing and visualization, techniques that brought me peace and presence in my hectic days of motherhood and work.
Typically, as an empty-nester with fewer responsibilities, I live a serene, regulated life sectioned into fitness and family time with creative projects sprinkled in. This even keel allowed me to skimp on my mental health go-to’s. But recent weeks have required an uptake in skill sets, like technology prowess, something that I lack. Without it, I’ve experienced a huge uptake in anxiety.
Yesterday I went to a puja ceremony for Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Durga. Together they represent abundance, wisdom, and strength. I particularly resonate with Durga now. She symbolizes truth, courage, and divine power over destructive forces.
How fortunate I was to join the gathering at my daughter’s in-laws home. It reminded me of my true priorities. If I’m not right with the Shakti of the Universe, I’m no good to anyone. My husband and children have tolerated my obsession with this book for a long, long time. Now I must give it wings to fly and move on to more important things like love and service.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!
